China unveils the first satellite smartphone

Beijing: China has unveiled its first satellite smartphone capable of covering the whole country and the disputed South China Sea. The satellite phone is designed for use with the country's first mobile communications satellite, Tiantong-1 (TT-1). The new smartphone, developed by state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), is scheduled to go on sale in two to three months, where it will compete in a global market dominated by the British Inmarsat system, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported. Satellite experts state that the new satellite smartphone was a product of the "space-based Silk Road", a long-term strategy proposed by Chinese aerospace companies, institutions and scholars to support the country's "One Belt, One Road" initiative. "The TT-1 smartphone is so far capable of covering the territory of China and the whole South China Sea," an engineer from CASC's Fifth Academy, based in Xian, Shaanxi province, said. "We are going to expand our coverage to the whole world by launching a network TT satellites in the next five years because our ultimate goal is to replace Inmarsat, or even surpass it," the Post report said.

Huawei launches new premium phone Mate 9

Munich: Huawei Technologies took the wraps of a new premium phone on Thursday, adding a new artificial intelligence feature it hopes will help it close the gap with Apple and market leader Samsung, which is reeling from scrapping its flagship phone. The Mate 9 is aimed squarely at the top end of the $400 billion global smartphone market, where professional users are looking for fast phones with long battery life. It includes a feature that enables the device to learn about the habits of its user and automatically put the most frequently used apps in easy reach - unlike, for example, Apple's iPhone, where icons that may occupy many screens apart from the start screen have to be manually ordered. "It learns how you use your phone," said Arne Herkelmann, Huawei's European head of handset portfolio and planning. The launch comes just three weeks after Samsung scrapped its flagship Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, dealing a huge blow to its reputation and outlook. With smartphone sales growth expected to slow in the coming years, device manufacturers are focusing on new ways to stand out from the crowd. Alphabet's Google last month launched the Pixel smartphone which has Google Assistant, the company's voice-activated artificial intelligence (AI) system and its answer to Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa. The Mate 9, introduced in Munich, is a 5.9-inch (15 cm) large-screen handset that boasts cameras with auto focus, directional microphones with noise cancellation and an improved user interface. The algorithm puts the user's favourite apps first, which makes the phones easier to use and also more energy-efficient. The phone's battery lasts for almost two days of heavy usage and can fully recharge in 90 minutes, Huawei said.

Apple launches MacBook Pro laptop

San Francisco: Apple on Thursday unveiled new MacBook Pro laptops infused with touch control features that people have embraced on smartphones. MacBook Pro models shown off at a special event at Apple's headquarters in Silicon Valley touted keyboards with "Touch Bar" controls where function keys have traditionally been positioned. Touch Bar adapts to display controls most relevant to whatever application is being used, from email or typing text to video editing or music mixing, demonstrations showed. New MacBook Pro models with 13-inch and 15-inch screens also had "Touch ID" fingerprint reading sensors built into power buttons, meaning that people will be able to unlock machines or make online purchases using fingers to confirm their identity. A MacBook Pro with a 13-inch screen and Touch Bar had a starting price of $1,799, while an upgraded model with the same screen size but a traditional keyboard was priced at $1,499. A 15-inch MacBook Pro with the touch control technology built in had a starting price of $2,399. Apple began taking orders on Thursday, with touch-enhanced models promised to begin shipping within three weeks and the standard keyboard version available immediately. Apple on Thursday also introduced a new TV application crafted to use iPhones, iPads and internet-video streaming boxes hubs for television viewing. "Now, there is a unified TV experience; one place to discover and enjoy your favorite TV show and movies across all your devices," Apple chief executive Tim Cook said at the event. Siri virtual assistant is built into the TV application, allowing people to ask for shows or searches naturally, a demonstration showed. The software allows for viewing live broadcasts and can search out content available in other applications on Apple TV.
